Getting Ready for State Fair: Packing Checklist & Show Ring Mindset

There’s something special about State Fair season. It’s the pinnacle of summer for many youth exhibitors—a chance to compete at a higher level, see old friends, and show off the hard work that’s been poured into livestock projects all year long. Whether this is your first time heading to the State Fair or you’re a seasoned showman, being prepared is the key to success.

✅ Packing Checklist: Don’t Forget the Essentials

Packing for State Fair can be overwhelming, especially with the added excitement and pressure. Here's a helpful list to make sure nothing important gets left behind:

For Your Animal:

  • Feed & supplements (bring extra!).

  • Hay, grain, and clean water buckets

  • Show halter, neck ropes, chains, and leads

  • Grooming supplies: soap, brushes, clippers, adhesives, sprays

  • Fans, extension cords, and stall mats

  • Bedding or shavings (if not provided)

  • Feed pans & scoops

  • Showstick or whip

  • Fly spray

For You:

  • Show clothes: CLEAN and ready to go (bring extras)

  • Boots or appropriate footwear

  • Belt, jeans, show shirt (check your rules for color guidelines!)

  • Water, snacks, and sunscreen

  • Rain gear—just in case

  • First aid kit (for both human and animal)

  • Extra socks & layers for weather swings

  • Paperwork: registration, health papers, entry forms

Extras That Can Save the Day:

  • Zip ties & duct tape (never underestimate their power!)

  • Sharpie, scissors, and notepad

  • Tool kit with basics (pliers, screwdriver, etc.)

  • Hand sanitizer & baby wipes

  • Fans & spray bottles to stay cool

🧠 Mindset in the Ring: Confidence, Class & Character

The State Fair is a big stage, but don’t let the size of the crowd shake your focus. Whether you place first or walk out without a ribbon, the biggest wins are often the ones that don’t hang on a wall.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Be prepared. Know your animal and be confident in your daily routine.

  • Stay calm. Animals feed off your energy—breathe, relax, and stay present.

  • Be respectful. Thank the judge, support your fellow exhibitors, and show class no matter the result.

  • Win or learn. Every class is a chance to grow. Take notes, ask questions, and keep improving.

💬 Final Thoughts: Make the Most of It

State Fair is about more than just banners and buckles. It’s about friendships, memories, and becoming a better stockman—and a better person. Enjoy the moments in the barn. Cheer on your friends. Learn from your mistakes. Soak it all in.

And if you're already thinking ahead to your 2026 project, don’t forget to check out our trusted breeders listed on the Breeders Tab at PacWestShowman.com . They’re here to help you start strong, and they support the youth livestock community every step of the way.
